ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Spectrum of a sentence

Imagine a big box of crayons. Each crayon has a different color, like red, blue, yellow, and green. When we use a group of words to make a sentence, it's like using crayons to make a picture.

The spectrum of a sentence is like a rainbow of colors, but instead of colors, we're looking at different parts of the sentence.

For example, let's look at the sentence: "The big brown dog ran quickly around the yard."

The first part of the sentence, "The big brown dog," is like the color red. It sets up the subject of the sentence, which is the dog.

The next part, "ran quickly," is like the color blue. It shows us the action that the dog is doing.

The last part, "around the yard," is like the color yellow. It tells us where the action is happening.

When we put all of these parts together, we get a sentence that looks and sounds like a complete picture. And just like how we can make different pictures with different colors of crayons, we can make different sentences by mixing and matching different parts.
