ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Speech perception

Okay kiddo, do you know what speech is? It’s when people use their mouth to say words so that others can understand what they’re saying.

Now, speech perception is how our brain understands and makes meaning out of the sounds we hear. When we hear someone talking, our brain has to work really hard to figure out what they’re saying.

It’s kind of like putting together a puzzle. The sounds we hear are like puzzle pieces, and our brain has to put them all together to make sense of the words.

But sometimes the sounds we hear can be really tricky, especially if we’re hearing a language or an accent we’re not used to.

So our brain has to use different parts to figure out what someone is saying. It uses our ears to hear the sounds, and then it uses our brain to make meaning out of them.

It’s pretty amazing how our brain can do all of this so quickly, and without us having to think about it too much. Speech perception is just one of the many amazing things our brain can do!
