Spent fuel pool

Okay kiddo, so when we use nuclear power to create electricity, we use something called fuel rods that contain a special material called uranium. But over time, the uranium becomes less powerful and we need to replace it with new fuel rods.

Now, the old fuel rods are still really, really hot and can give off a type of radiation called gamma rays. So, we put them in a big swimming pool-like container called a spent fuel pool.

This pool is filled with water to help absorb some of the radiation and keep the fuel rods from getting too hot. The water is also constantly circulated to keep it cool and prevent it from boiling.

The spent fuel pool is usually located near the nuclear reactor and is built to be very strong to protect people from any possible accidents.

So, in summary, a spent fuel pool is a big swimming pool-like container filled with water that holds old nuclear fuel rods that are still giving off radiation. It keeps the rods cool and prevents any accidents from happening.
