ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Radioactive waste

Radioactive waste is a special kind of trash that is really dangerous because it can make people very sick if they touch it. When we use things that are radioactive, like nuclear power plants or medical machines that help doctors see inside our bodies, they create waste that still has some of that radioactive stuff in it.

This waste needs to be handled very carefully so that it doesn't hurt anyone or the environment. Scientists put the waste in special containers that are made of really strong materials, like steel and concrete, so that they can keep it away from people and animals.

Sometimes, the waste is even buried really deep underground or put in special buildings called "repositories" where it can stay safe for a long, long time. Scientists and governments work really hard to make sure that the waste is taken care of properly so that our world stays safe and healthy.
