Stanhope (optical bijou)

Dear little one,

A stanhope is a tiny optical device that looks like a little cylinder or tube. It's really small, so you might need a magnifying glass or microscope to see it properly! Inside this little tube, there is a very small photograph, which is usually a picture of a famous person, a place, or a cute animal.

When you hold the stanhope up to your eye and look inside, you will see that the picture is a lot clearer and bigger than it actually is. This is because the stanhope magnifies the tiny picture, making it easier for you to see all the details.

Sometimes, stanhopes were used as jewelry, and people would wear them as brooches or necklaces. These were called optical bijous, which means that they were decorative pieces of jewelry that also had an optical (or visual) function.

So now you know what a stanhope (optical bijou) is. It's a tiny device that holds a small photo and helps you see it better, and sometimes it can also be worn as a piece of jewelry!
