Stannary

Stannary is a weird word that is used to describe a place where people dig up and process something called tin. Tin is a shiny metal that is used to make things like cans, roof tiles, and sometimes even toys!

Stannaries were really important a long time ago, before we had fancy machines to dig up and process tin. People who worked in stannaries were called tin miners, and they used special tools to dig tunnels underground to find the tin.

Once the tin miners found some tin, they would bring it up to the surface where it was sorted into different types based on its quality. The really good tin was called "block tin" and was used for fancy things like making jewelry, while the not-so-good tin was used for more practical things like making roofs for houses.

Even though stannaries aren't as important anymore, we still use tin all the time in our daily lives without even realizing it!
