ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Star cluster

So imagine you have a bunch of stars that are all best friends and they like to hang out and play together. They all live really close to each other in a big group called a star cluster.

Now, these stars aren't ordinary stars, they are very special because they were born around the same time from a big cloud of gas and dust. They are all the same age, just like all the kids in your class who were born in the same year.

Some star clusters have a few hundred stars and others have thousands of them. Just like how some kids have big families and some have small ones.

One thing that's really interesting about star clusters is that they all move together like a big family. So when they're born, they're all hanging out right next to each other, and as they get older, they all start moving away from each other a little bit, but they still stay close enough to be in the same cluster. Just like how when you grow up, you and your friends might move to different neighborhoods, but you still go to the same school.

Scientists like to study star clusters because they can tell us a lot about how stars form and evolve over time. They can use telescopes to observe the stars and measure things like their brightness and temperature to learn more about them.

So that's a star cluster, a big group of stars that are all best friends and move together like a family.
