ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Star semiring

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a toy box filled with loads of toys that you can play with. Each toy is unique. There are cars, dolls, blocks, and so on. But, there’s a catch - every time you take a toy out of the box, you need to do some math with it!

We’re going to play a game called the Star Semiring game. The game has two rules:

1. You can only take one toy out of the box at a time
2. You have to do some math with the toy after you take it out of the box

Now, let me explain some big words that you might not have heard before.

A semiring is like a special set of numbers. It’s like a group of toys in your toy box, but it has rules that describe how you can play with the toys. A semiring includes two operations: **addition** and **multiplication** (just like 1+1=2 and 2x3=6).

Now, let’s talk about another special toy in your toy box - the star toy. This toy is special because it’s not like any other toy. When you do math with the star toy, it doesn’t change anything!

For example, if you add or multiply the star with any other toy, the result will always be the same toy you started with. So, if you add the star with a car toy, you’ll still have a car toy. If you multiply the star with a doll toy, you’ll still have a doll toy.

And this is what we call a Star Semiring! It’s a special set of toys where the star toy doesn’t change anything when added or multiplied with any other toy in the set. Cool, isn’t it?

Now, let’s summarize. A star semiring is like a toy box with special toys. It includes the star toy, which doesn’t change anything when you add or multiply it with any other toy in the box. And, it has rules that describe how you can play with these toys which include addition and multiplication.

So, next time you take a toy out of your toy box, remember to do some Star Semiring math with it!
