ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ring of sets

Okay kiddo, let's talk about rings of sets. A set is just a collection of things, like your toy cars, or your favorite books. Now, imagine you have a bunch of different collections of your toys or books. You might have one collection of your red cars, another collection of your blue cars, and so on.

A ring of sets is when we look at different collections of sets together, and we want to see which sets we can combine from these collections. Think of it like a game of Legos where we can take pieces from different sets and build something new.

But not all sets can be combined! Just like how you can’t combine your toy cars with your books. A set can only be in the ring if it meets certain rules. These rules say that if we have two sets in the ring, we can put them together (which means we can find their intersection and union) and we will still have a set inside the ring.

So when we talk about a ring of sets, we are really just talking about a group of collections of sets that we can combine together using certain rules. It’s like building with Legos – we can only build certain things with certain pieces!
