ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

State police

State police are police officers who work for state governments. They wear uniforms and carry guns like other police officers, but they serve a different purpose. State police patrol highways, investigate crimes, and enforce laws all across the state they serve. Unlike local police who usually only operate within city or town limits, state police can help people in any part of the state they serve. State police also provide support to local police departments when needed and help with major cases, such as investigating murders and apprehending fugitives.
