ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Statistically close

Okay kiddo, imagine you and your friend are playing a game of basketball. You're both trying to make as many baskets as possible. At the end of the game, both of you have made similar number of baskets, like you made 20 baskets and your friend made 19 baskets. That means the number of baskets you made and your friend made are "statistically close" to each other.

When we say two things are "statistically close", we mean there isn't a big difference between them. We can use statistics to see if things are different or not. Sometimes, the difference might be so small that we can say they are practically the same. Other times, the difference might be larger, and we can say they are different.

So, for example, if we are comparing two groups of people - say, their heights - we might find that the average height of Group A is 5 feet 6 inches while Group B's average height is 5 feet 8 inches. That's a small difference, so we can say the groups are "statistically close" to each other in terms of height.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
