ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Storage of wine

Okay kiddo, so you know how we put things away in our toy bin or our closet to keep them safe and organized? Well, grown-ups do something similar with their wine bottles, only they call it "storing wine".

Wine is a special drink that can get better with age, kind of like how some foods taste better when they've been cooked slowly for a long time. But for wine to get better, it needs to be stored in a certain way.

The first thing to know is that wine doesn't like sudden changes in temperature, light or humidity. That's why grown-ups put their wine bottles in a cool, dark and humid place like a cellar or a dedicated wine fridge. It's kind of like a special toy bin made just for wine bottles.

But not all wines are the same, and some prefer to be stored differently. For example, red wines like to be stored at a slightly warmer temperature than white wines. And some wines, like Champagne, need to be stored on their side because they have a special cork that needs to stay wet to stay sealed properly.

When grown-ups store their wine bottles, they also try to keep them still and not move them too much. That's because wine can be a delicate drink, and too much shaking or vibrations can affect its taste.

So, to sum up: storing wine is like putting toys away in a toy bin, but for grown-ups and their special drink. It has to be stored in a cool, dark and humid place, and some wines need to be stored differently than others. And most importantly, wine bottles need to be kept still so they don't get damaged.
