ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Stress (linguistics)

Stress in linguistics means putting extra emphasis on a certain part of a word or sentence. It's like when you want to say something really important or exciting, you might raise your voice or speak louder to show how much you mean it. In the same way, certain words or parts of words can be stressed to show that they are the most important or meaningful part of a sentence. For example, if you say "I LOVE ice cream," you might stress the word "love" to show how much you really enjoy it. This use of stress adds more emotion, meaning and nuance to language, making it more interesting and engaging to listen to.
