Subdivision surface

Have you ever played with a balloon and squeezed it together to make it smaller? That's kind of what subdivision surface is like.

Subdivision surface is a fancy word for a way of making 3D shapes that are really smooth and have no sharp edges. It's like taking a big box and rounding out all of its corners so that it looks more like a ball than a box.

Basically, what happens is that a 3D shape starts off as a simple shape, like a cube or a sphere or a cylinder. Then, the shape gets divided up into smaller and smaller pieces, like cutting a pizza into more and more slices.

Once the shape is divided up, each little piece of the shape gets moved around and made smoother. Think of a play-doh figure that you squish and shape into different forms.

And just like how you can make different shapes with play-doh, once the shape is smoothed out, new shapes can be created from it with ease.

So, subdivision surface is a way of making really nice, smooth 3D shapes by dividing up a simple shape into smaller pieces and then making them all smooth like play-doh.
