ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subquotient

Imagine you have a big chocolate cake and you want to share it with your three friends. You cut the cake into four equal pieces and give one piece to each friend. Now each friend has their own piece of cake, but they all look different because they received different parts of the cake.

The pieces of cake that your friends have are called "quotients". A quotient is the result of dividing one thing into smaller, equal parts. In this case, you divided the cake into four equal parts and gave each friend one part.

But what if you wanted to know how much cake each of your friends got in relation to each other? This is where subquotients come in.

To find the subquotient, you take the difference between the amount of cake that two friends received and divide it again by the total amount of cake they both received. For example, if your first friend got half of the cake and your second friend got a quarter of the cake, their subquotient would be:

((1/2) - (1/4)) / (1/2 + 1/4) = (1/4) / (3/4) = 1/3

This means that your first friend got one-third more cake than your second friend.

Overall, a subquotient is a way to compare the parts that result from dividing something into equal parts.
