Succession to the Byzantine Empire

When the Byzantine Empire ended, there wasn't anyone left to replace it. That means nobody took over control of the area and nobody was officially in charge. So the ending of the Byzantine Empire meant that no one was in charge and people were left to figure out what would come next.
