ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Suffixaufnahme

Suffixaufnahme is a big word that means "suffix agreement" in German. Let's say you want to add a word ending, or suffix, to the end of a word in German. When you do this, the new ending has to match the gender, number, and case of the original word. It's kind of like putting together a puzzle – all the pieces have to fit perfectly.

For example, the word "Hund" means "dog" in German, and if you want to add the suffix "-e," the word becomes "Hunde." This new word still means "dogs," but now it tells us that there are more than one dog (plural).

But if we wanted to add the same suffix to the word "Tisch" (which means "table"), it would become "Tische" because the original word is masculine and singular. If we tried to add "-e" to the feminine word "Katze" (which means "cat"), it would become "Katze" because it already ends in the letter E.

Suffixaufnahme might sound complicated, but it's a very important rule in German grammar. By following it, we can make sure that our sentences are clear and easy to understand.
