LGBT youth are people between the ages of 13-24 who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Unfortunately, these young people can face more challenges and negativity than their non-LGBT peers. One sad result of this is that LGBT youth are more likely to think about, attempt, or die by suicide. This happens because LGBT youth are often the targets of bullying, discrimination, or rejection from family or peers, which can lead to depression and other mental health challenges. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for young LGBT people. To help keep LGBT youth safe, it's important to create welcoming and supportive environments at home, school, and in the community. Making sure these young people are connected to trusted adults who they can talk to and turn to for support can make a big difference.
