Sumela Monastery

Okay, so imagine a big castle on a really tall cliff. That's what the Sumela Monastery is like. It's a really, really old place where people used to go to pray and practice their religion called Christianity. It's in a country called Turkey, which is very far away from us.

The monks who used to live there were like superheroes. They would climb up and down the cliff every day to get water for their Monastery, which is really hard to do. They also had to grow their own food and make their own clothes, which is a lot different from how we live today.

The Monastery was built way back in the year 386 by some important people called Greek monks. They were very good at building things, and they spent a long time making the Monastery look very pretty. They even painted pictures on the walls inside to show people what their religion was all about.

Many people used to go to the Sumela Monastery to see its beauty and pray there. But over time, the Monastery got old and started to break down. That's why it was closed for a while. But don't worry - some special people called archaeologists came along and fixed it up. Now people from all over the world can go see it again!

So, now you know that the Sumela Monastery is like a really cool old castle on a very tall cliff, where monks used to live a long time ago to practice their religion. People from all over the world can visit it now and see how beautiful it is, thanks to the hard work of archaeologists who fixed it up.
