Okay, kiddo, so do you know what rules are? They're things that grown-ups make to help keep things in order. Well, a long time ago, there were some really important people who wanted to make rules about what other people could wear. These rules were called sumptuary laws.
Basically, these laws said that depending on how much money you had or what job you did, you could only wear certain types of clothes or accessories. For example, if you were really wealthy, you could wear fancy clothes with lots of colors and designs, but if you were poor, you might have to wear plain clothes made from cheap materials.
There were even rules about how long your clothes could be or how wide your sleeves could be. Can you imagine having to ask permission just to wear a certain type of hat or belt?
The idea behind sumptuary laws was that it would help keep people in their place and show who had more money and power. But over time, these laws became less common as people started to believe that everyone should have the right to wear whatever they wanted. And that's why, these days, we can wear whatever clothes and accessories we like (as long as they're appropriate for the occasion, of course!).
