Sun (heraldry)

A sun is a special symbol that can be used in a style of art called "heraldry." Heraldry is like using very special stickers to show important things about yourself or your family. People use suns as stickers to show that they are important or powerful, just like the sun is important and powerful in the sky.

The sun is drawn to look like a big, round circle with wavy lines coming out of it like rays of light. Sometimes it's called a "sunburst" because it looks like the sun is bursting out of the circle! Each sun in heraldry can look different, but they all mean the same thing.

People have been using suns in heraldry for a very long time, even in ancient times. It was a symbol of the Greek god Apollo, who was the god of light and music. Today, lots of countries and groups still use suns in their heraldry to show how important and special they are.
