ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Swing (politics)

Swing in politics is like playing on a playground where there are two teams, and the team with the most people wins. In politics, there are two main teams, Democrats and Republicans. During elections, people decide which team they want to be on by voting for a person who belongs to either of the two teams. Sometimes, people cannot make up their minds for whom to vote, and they switch teams. These people are called swingers.

Just like on the playground, the swingers can make the game more exciting because they can go from one team to the other, which can affect who wins. Imagine that there are ten people on each team, and then five people decide to change teams. Now, one team has 15 players and the other team only has five, making it very likely that the team with 15 players will win.

Swing is essential in politics because they decide the winner. For example, in a close race, the swing voters can determine if the Democrats or Republicans win. So, both teams work hard to convince the swingers to join their side by showing why they are the better team.

In simple terms, swing in politics is like a game of playground, where players can switch teams, and the team with more people win. The swingers can make the game more exciting and have the power to decide who wins.
