The Sydney Tar Ponds are a big mess of toxic waste in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. A long time ago, a company used to make things like tar and other chemicals in that area. But some of those chemicals spilled into the ground and into the nearby river. This made the area really dirty and dangerous for people and animals.
For a long time, people knew that something needed to be done about the Sydney Tar Ponds. They knew it was not safe for anyone to be around them. So, after many years of talking and planning, the government decided to clean up the area.
