ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Synodic day

A synodic day is how long it takes for the sun to go from its highest point in the sky, also known as noon or midday, and return to that same point. Imagine you and your friends are playing a game of tag, but instead of running around, you're standing still and spinning around in circles. After one spin, you face the same direction you did before the spin. That's kind of what the sun does, but instead of spinning, it appears to move across the sky as the Earth rotates. So, a synodic day is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one rotation and for the sun to "tag" the same point in the sky again. This day is slightly longer than 24 hours because the Earth is also moving around the sun at the same time, so the sun has to travel a little further to get back to its starting point each day.
