ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Systematic desensitization

Systematic desensitization is like when you're scared of something, but you slowly start to feel less scared of it over time. Let's say you're really scared of spiders. To help you feel less scared of spiders, someone might show you a picture of a spider from far away, where it's very small. You might feel a little scared, but not too much. Then they might show you a picture of a spider a little closer up, but still not too close. You might feel a little more scared, but still not too much. Gradually, they'll show you closer and closer pictures of spiders, until eventually you can see a real spider up close and not feel as scared anymore.

This is called "systematic desensitization" because it's a gradual process that helps you get used to the thing you're scared of in a systematic (ordered) way. It can help you feel more comfortable and less anxious about things that used to scare you a lot.
