ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tacking (law)

Tacking is when you add different periods of time when someone else was using a property to your own period of time using that property in order to show you have been using it longer. It is kind of like adding up all the time you have been playing with a toy with all the time your friend was playing with the same toy, so you can tell everyone you have been playing with it for a really long time. This is important because it can help you show that you have rights to that property even if you haven't been using it as long as someone else, but they were using it before you. So, tacking helps determine who has the right to use a property and for how long.
