ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tag and release

Tag and release is when scientists or fishers catch a fish, put a tag on it, and then let it go back into the water. The tag is like a little bracelet with a number on it. This helps scientists keep track of where the fish goes and how long it lives.

It's like when you play a game of tag with your friends. If you're "it" and you tag someone, they become "it" and have to tag someone else. In tag and release, the fish is "tagged" and then released back into the water, so it can swim away and continue doing fishy things.

This is important because it helps us learn more about fish and other aquatic creatures. By tagging them, we can study their movement patterns, migration routes, and behavior. We can also track changes in fish populations over time, which helps us understand how to better protect them and their habitats. It's like doing a science experiment, but with fish!
