ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tapa cloth

Tapa cloth is a special kind of cloth that is made by people who live in certain parts of the world, like the islands of the Pacific Ocean. To make tapa cloth, they use the bark of certain trees such as mulberry, paper mulberry or fig trees, which is like the skin of the tree.

First, they soak the bark in water until it softens and then they beat it with a special tool called a mallet. The mallet is like a stick with a flat end. They use it to hit the wet bark over and over again until it gets really thin and flat.

Then, they place the flat bark on a big rock or another hard surface and decorate it using special designs. They might use colorful paints made from plants or they might just leave the natural color of the bark. Once they’re done decorating, they let it dry in the sun.

After it’s dry, they can use tapa cloth for many different things. They might use it as clothing, blankets, wall hangings or even as bags or baskets.

So, tapa cloth is a special kind of cloth that is made by people in certain parts of the world using tree bark, a mallet, and special designs. They then use it for many different things!
