ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Targum

Okay, so imagine you're reading a really big book and you don't understand some of the words. That's kind of like what happened a long time ago when people read a book called the Torah. The Torah is a really important book for some people and it has a lot of important rules and stories in it.

But some people couldn't read the Torah because it was written in a very old language that they didn't understand very well. So some other people helped by explaining what the words meant in a language that the people could understand.

That explanation in a language that people could understand is called a targum. It's like a translation or interpretation of the words in the Torah.

So today, when people read the Torah, they can read it in the original language or they can read a targum which helps them understand what the words mean. It's like having a really helpful friend who can translate for you!
