Tatsumi Hijikata was a man who lived in Japan and he really liked to dance in a way that was different from what other people were doing. He made up his own style of dance that he called Butoh. Butoh is a kind of dance that is very slow and strange-looking. It's not like other dances that you might see on TV or at a dance party.
Hijikata started doing Butoh in the 1950s with another person named Kazuo Ohno. They both wanted to create a dance that was different from everything else. They would move very slowly and do strange movements with their bodies. Sometimes they looked like they were animals or ghosts. Other times they would make scary faces or pretend to be sick.
People didn't know what to make of Butoh at first, but over time more and more people started to like it. Butoh became really famous in Japan and then it spread to other countries too. Now Butoh is known all over the world as a very unique kind of dance that tells a story with strange and slow movements. And it's all thanks to Tatsumi Hijikata!
