ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Taxation of the Jews in Europe

Okay, let me explain the taxation of Jews in Europe like you're five years old.

You know how sometimes when you go to the store with your mommy or daddy, you have to pay money for the things you want to buy like candy or toys? Well, that's called paying for something, and it’s a little bit like what happened to the Jewish people in Europe a long, long time ago.

There were some very old rules in Europe that said the Jewish people had to pay some extra money or taxes just for being Jewish. This was because the rulers of the countries wanted to make a lot of money, and they thought that the Jewish people had a lot of money, so they charged them different taxes and fees.

It was not fair because some Jewish people did not have a lot of money, but they still had to pay the extra taxes. The rulers were not nice to the Jewish people, and they made them pay taxes that were much higher than what everyone else had to pay, even for the same things.

This made Jewish people really sad, and many of them had to work really hard just to pay all the extra taxes. The rulers in Europe did this for many years, but eventually, they stopped doing it because it was not fair.

Now, we’re all more willing to treat each other with respect and fairness, regardless of the religion, and that's a good thing.
