ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Telegraphist

A telegraphist is a person who works with a telegraph machine to send and receive messages over a long distance. These machines were like typing machines where you could type letters and the machine would make dots and dashes for each letter, which was sent over a wire to another machine at a distant location. This wire is like a long string that connects two telegraphs that can be very far away from each other, even in different cities or countries!

So, imagine you want to send a message to your friend who lives in another country. You would go to a telegraph office and type your message on the machine, and the telegraphist at the office would send it to the telegraphist in your friend's country. Your friend's telegraphist would then receive the message on their machine and write it down. This way, you can communicate with your friend even though they are very far away!

Telegraphists were also responsible for receiving messages and delivering them to the right people. They would have to be very good at typing, reading and writing in order to do their job well. Sometimes, telegraphists would have to work long hours, especially during emergencies when urgent messages needed to be sent.

Although telegraph machines are not used anymore due to advancements in technology, telegraphists played an important role in history by connecting people across long distances, allowing them to communicate and share news in a way that was not possible before.
