ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Television format

When you watch TV, there are different formats that the shows can be in. Think of it like different shapes of the TV screen. The most common TV format is called 16:9, which is like a rectangle. This is what most TVs look like these days.

There is also an older TV format called 4:3, which is more like a square. You might see this format in older TV shows or movies. Some people still have older TVs that are shaped like this.

Another type of TV format is called widescreen, which is even more rectangular than 16:9. This format is used in movie theaters and some newer TV shows.

Different devices, like computers and smartphones, also have their own screen formats. So, when you watch something on TV or a different device, the picture might look different or have bars on the top or sides depending on the format it was made in.
