ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Temporary satellite

A temporary satellite is like a special toy that only stays in the sky for a little while. It's called temporary because it's not there all the time, like the sun or the moon. Scientists and engineers send these toys up into the sky to do special jobs, like taking pictures of the Earth or communicating with people far away.

The toy gets sent into space by a big rocket. The rocket is like a giant pencil that can write on the sky. When it reaches a special spot in the sky called an orbit, it lets go of the toy so it goes round and round the Earth.

But just like when you play with a toy and then put it away in a toy box, these temporary satellites don't stay in the sky forever. They only last for a certain amount of time before they stop working and go away. When this happens, the toy falls back to Earth and either burns up in the atmosphere or lands in the ocean.

Scientists and engineers can make different kinds of toys for different jobs. Some toys take pictures of the Earth to help us learn more about our planet, while others help us talk to people far away, like astronauts in space. Some toys even help us figure out how to keep our planet safe from space rocks that might cause damage.

So when you see a temporary satellite in the sky, remember that it's like a special toy that's helping us learn and communicate with others far away. But just like all toys, it won't be there forever, and we'll have to say goodbye once it's done its job.
