Tensor derivative (continuum mechanics)

In continuum mechanics, a tensor derivative is a mathematical tool used to describe how a quantity changes when something else changes. Say you have a box that is filled with water. If you heat up the water, it will expand, and the volume of the box will change. The tensor derivative can be used to measure how the box's volume changes as the water gets warmer and warmer.
