Terra Mariana

Terra Mariana is a fancy name for a place that existed a long, long time ago in what we today call Estonia, Latvia, and parts of Russia. It was a special place because it was ruled by the church. A long time ago, people thought that God had given them this land, and so it belonged to Him.

The church had a lot of power back then, and it wanted to protect its land from invaders. This is why it created a special ruler, called a Master, who was in charge of Terra Mariana. The Master was like a king, but he answered to the church instead of a normal king. The Master was in charge of everything in Terra Mariana, like the army, the law, and even the money.

People who lived in Terra Mariana were called Livonians. They were farmers, hunters, and fishermen. They lived in small villages and had to follow the laws of the church. The church wanted to spread its religion, so it sent missionaries to teach the Livonians about Christianity.

Unfortunately, Terra Mariana did not last forever. In the 16th century, Russia invaded the land, and the Livonians had to surrender. The church lost its control over Terra Mariana, and it became a part of Russia. But even though it only existed for a short time, Terra Mariana remains an important part of history because it shows us how powerful the church used to be and how people used to live a very long time ago.
