The Test Act was a law created in England in 1673. It said that people could not work in any public office unless they took a special oath called the Test Oath. The Test Oath had to be sworn by someone who wanted a public job, and it said that they had to promise to be loyal to the king and Church of England. People had to swear that they believed in the Church of England and did not believe in anything else. This meant that people who belonged to other religions, like Catholics or Jews, could not get public jobs.
