ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The Ants Go Marching

Ok kiddo, have you ever seen ants walking in a line, one behind the other? Sometimes they're carrying bits of food, and sometimes they're just walking with nothing in their mouths. The ants go marching means that they are all walking together, in a big group or line.

The reason they walk like this is because ants are very good at working as a team. Each ant has a special job to do, like collecting food or taking care of the babies. By walking in a group, they can all work together and get things done faster.

When you sing "the ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah!" in the song, it means that the ants are walking in a line, one after the other. When you sing "the ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah!", it means that now there are two ants walking side by side. And so on, until there are lots and lots of ants all working together.

So when you see ants marching in a line, you can sing the song and pretend you're part of their team too!
