ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The Devil's Double

Okay, kiddo, so imagine you have a pretend friend who looks just like you, talks like you, and acts like you. But this friend is not like your other friends who always want to play with you and make you happy. This friend is a little bit trickier and always wants to do things that might not be very nice or safe.

Now imagine a very important person, like a king or a president, who has a special job for you. The job is to pretend to be this important person's friend, but you have to pretend to be the not-so-nice friend instead of yourself. The job is very important because it helps keep the important person safe, but it also means you have to do things that might make you feel uncomfortable, scared, or guilty.

That's kind of what the Devil's Double is all about. It's a phrase that describes a person who is hired to pretend to be someone else, usually a powerful or dangerous person, in order to protect them from harm. It's called the Devil's Double because the person who hires them is usually not very nice or kind, and the job they have to do is often very difficult and not very pleasant.

So, just like your pretend friend who sometimes wants to do things that aren't very nice, the Devil's Double has to pretend to be someone they're not in order to keep others safe. But it's important to remember that being a Devil's Double is just a job and it's not something that we should aspire to be when we grow up.
