ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The Farthest

Imagine you and your best friend are running away from your house as far as you can go. You look back and see your house getting smaller and smaller until it disappears. The place where your house disappeared is called the farthest point you have been from your house.

Now, let's imagine you keep running and running and you are not stopping until you reach the very end of a long, long road. When you finally stop, you look around and see nothing but emptiness, no roads, no trees, no people, just emptiness. This place where you stopped is called the farthest point you have been from your starting point.

When you look at the Earth from the outside, you will see that it is a big round ball. Just like when you look at your ball at home, you can imagine a spot on the ball that is the farthest point from us. Scientists have found out that the farthest point from us is about 13 billion light-years away. A light-year is the distance that light can travel in one year, which is about 6 trillion miles. So the farthest point that we know of is about 78,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles away! That's a very big number even for grown-ups!
