Theory X and Theory Y are different beliefs about people and their work motivation. Theory X suggests that people generally do not like to work and they need to be closely watched and directed by managers. Theory Y suggests that people can be self-motivated and they can be inspired by a challenging and meaningful job.
So Theory X is like when someone is trying to get their five year old to do their chores by yelling and threatening them. Theory Y is like when someone is trying to get their five year old to be kind and helpful to others by rewarding them or praising them.
