ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Therefore sign

The "therefore sign" is a symbol that looks like three dots in a triangle shape. It is used in math to show that if one thing is true, then something else must also be true.

Let's say you have a math problem that says "If Sally has four apples and gives two to her friend, how many apples does she have left?" You can use the therefore sign to show what happens next.

First, you write "Sally has four apples" as a statement. You can use the letter "A" to represent this statement.

A: Sally has four apples

Next, you write "Sally gives two apples to her friend" as another statement. You can use the letter "B" to represent this statement.

B: Sally gives two apples to her friend

Now, you want to use the therefore sign to show what happens as a result of these two statements. You write the therefore sign and then write out the conclusion.

A: Sally has four apples
B: Sally gives two apples to her friend

∴ Sally has two apples left

The three dots in the therefore sign represent the steps in between the two statements and the conclusion. So, if you see the therefore sign in math, it means that if something is true, then it leads to another thing being true as well.
