Thieves' cant

Thieves' cant is a secret language that thieves used to talk in so that they could not be understood by other people. It was made up of words, symbols, and hand signals. For example, someone might use the word “rumpus” to mean “trouble” and the word “rook” to mean “thief”. By using these special words thieves were able to talk about criminal activities without anyone else understanding them.
