ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Threat display

Okay kiddo, you know how sometimes when we feel scared or threatened, we make a certain expression on our face or our body language changes? This is called a "threat display."

A threat display is a way of communicating to others that we are feeling scared or threatened and that we might fight back if we need to. It's like a warning signal that helps us protect ourselves.

Animals do this too! When they feel threatened, they might puff up their fur or feathers, make loud noises, or show their teeth or claws. This is all to tell the other animal, "Hey, back off! I'm ready to fight if I need to!"

It's important to remember that a threat display is just a warning. It doesn't mean that the animal or person will actually attack. It's just a way of saying, "Hey, I'm feeling scared right now, so please give me some space."

So next time you see an animal or even a person acting like they're ready to fight, remember that they're probably just doing a threat display to protect themselves.
