ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ticket scalping

Imagine you have a toy that everybody really wants to play with. But there are only a few toys available for everyone to share. So some people really want to have one toy just for themselves.

Now imagine that these toys are actually tickets to a big concert, sports game or event. Everyone wants to go to see their favorite band or team, but the venue where the event is taking place holds only a limited number of people.

Unfortunately, some people buy up as many toys (tickets) as they can afford and then instead of playing with them themselves, they try to sell them to others for much more money than they paid for them originally. This is called “ticket scalping.”

Ticket scalping is not fair because it means that someone who really wants to see the show has to pay a lot more money to get one of the limited tickets. It’s not fair because someone who can afford to buy a lot of tickets has chances to resell them for more money, while other people can't afford buying tickets for their favorite show.

Sometimes, ticket scalping is actually illegal because it's against the rules of many event organizers and ticket sellers. But it also depends on where you live and the laws in your country.

In conclusion, ticket scalping is when someone buys tickets to an event, just to resell them at a much higher price than what they paid for them in the first place. This can make it tough (and sometimes not possible) for people who don't have a lot of money to go and see their favorite bands, singers, or teams play.
