ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tile-based game

Okay kiddo, have you ever played a game where you move your character around on little squares, like a checkerboard or a puzzle with small pieces? That's what we call a tile-based game.

In these games, the area where you play is made up of many little squares, called tiles. Each tile is the same size and shape, and they fit together really neatly like puzzle pieces.

When you move your character, they can only move from one tile to another. You can't move your character halfway between two tiles or across multiple tiles at once. This way of moving helps make the game easier to design and play because everything is organized on a grid.

These kinds of games can work for all kinds of different games, like adventure games, role-playing games, or puzzle games. In fact, many of our favorite games, like Super Mario and Pokemon, are tile-based!

So next time you play one of these games, remember that the reason you move around in a straight line from tile to tile is because that's just how the game works!
