Timeline of Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain

Many, many years ago, before anyone can really remember, there was a big land called Britain. At first, there were only some tribes of people living there, like the Celts. But then, around the year 410, some bad guys called the Romans, who had been in control of Britain for a long time, decided they didn't want to be there anymore.

So, the Romans left and Britain was left without a boss for a little while. During this time, some other tribes of people from other parts of Europe started to come over and make their homes in Britain. These people were called the Anglo-Saxons.

The first Anglo-Saxons probably arrived in Britain in the 5th century, but it's hard to say exactly when. They came from areas that we now call Germany and Denmark. They were looking for a new place to live and they thought Britain would be a good place to settle down.

At first, the people who were already living in Britain, like the Celts, didn't really like the Anglo-Saxons. They saw them as foreigners and didn't want them there. But over time, some of the Celts and the Anglo-Saxons started to get along and even marry each other.

As the years went on, more and more Anglo-Saxons came to Britain and they started to take over more land. They created their own towns and kingdoms, like the famous one of Wessex. They spoke their own language, which was very different from the Celtic languages that people in Britain had been speaking for hundreds of years.

The Anglo-Saxons were in control of most of Britain until 1066, when another group of people called the Normans came in and took over. But even after the Normans arrived, the Anglo-Saxon culture and language still had a big impact on Britain.

So that's the story of the Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain. It was a long, long time ago, but we can still see some of the effects of it today.
