ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of computing hardware before 1950

Before 1950, people did not have computers in the way we do now. Instead, they used machines that were designed to do specific tasks.

One of the oldest computing machines was the abacus, which is a frame or board with beads on it that people could slide back and forth to do math. People have used this type of machine for thousands of years.

Later on, people started using other types of mechanical calculators. These machines were able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers automatically, which made it faster and easier for people to do math. Some of these machines used gears, levers, and cams to perform their calculations.

In the early 1800s, Charles Babbage designed a machine called the Analytical Engine. This was one of the first machines that could actually be considered a computer. It was designed to follow a set of instructions, or a program, to perform calculations. Babbage never actually built the machine, but his designs were important for later computer engineers.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people started building electrical machines that were faster and more versatile than their mechanical counterparts. These machines used electrical switches and relays to perform their calculations. One of the most famous of these machines was the Harvard Mark I, which was built in the early 1940s.

All of these early computing machines paved the way for the more advanced computers that we have today. They were simpler and slower than modern computers, but they laid the foundation for the technology that we rely on today.
