ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of low-temperature technology

Okay kiddo, let's talk about how humans have learned to keep things cool over time.

A long, long time ago, before there were refrigerators or ice makers, people had to rely on nature to keep their food and drinks cool. They would store things in cool places, like caves, or use ice or snow from the mountains.

But, as time passed, people started to invent things to help them keep things cold. In the late 1700s, a man named William Cullen discovered that you could use a vacuum to make things colder. This was the first step towards modern refrigeration!

Then, in the early 1800s, a man named Michael Faraday discovered that certain gases could be used to cool things down even more. This led to the invention of early refrigerators, which used ammonia or other gases to make things cool.

But these early refrigerators were big and expensive, so only the very wealthy could afford them. It wasn't until the early 20th century that refrigeration technology became more widespread and affordable.

Today, we have all kinds of low-temperature technology, from refrigerators and freezers to air conditioning units and even cryogenic freezing machines. And all of these things help us keep things cool, whether it's our food, our homes, or even medical supplies and scientific samples.

So there you have it, a brief history of low-temperature technology. Stay cool, kiddo!
