ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of the evolutionary history of life

Okay, so a long, long time ago, the world was a very different place than it is today. There were no people or animals, just very basic living things called microbes. These microbes were very simple and could only do very basic things like feed and reproduce.

Over time, these microbes started to change and evolve. They learned how to do new things and became more complex. Some microbes became plants, which could make food from the sun, and others became animals, which could move and hunt for food.

As time went on, more and more complex animals evolved, like fish, which could swim around in water, and then eventually reptiles, which could live on land. Some of these reptiles evolved into dinosaurs, which were some of the biggest creatures that ever lived!

But, about 65 million years ago, a big asteroid crashed into the Earth and killed most of the dinosaurs. This allowed other animals, like mammals, to start evolving more and eventually led to the evolution of humans!

So, basically, life started as very simple microbes and evolved into lots of different and complex animals over millions and millions of years!
